Ausangate Mountain Trek – 5 Days Peru
Overview
The Ausangate Trek is one of the most challenging and rewarding adventures in Peru. In this 5-day program, you will explore the high Andes, pass through colorful landscapes, see glacier lakes, and visit the iconic Rainbow Mountain before returning to Cusco.
This trek takes you around the sacred Ausangate Mountain (6,385 m), considered one of the most spiritual peaks in the Andes. Ideal for experienced hikers looking to disconnect, breathe pure mountain air, and witness some of the most dramatic sceneries in the country.
Itinerary
In this 5-day expedition, you’ll hike at elevations between 4,000 m and 5,200 m, camp near turquoise lagoons, and admire the Andean wildlife like alpacas, vicuñas, and condors. The highlight is the final visit to Rainbow Mountain.
Day 1: Cusco – Tinki – Upis
- 5:00 AM: Pick-up from your hotel and drive to Tinki (3.5 hrs).
- Start the trek towards Upis (4,400 m), walking through remote Andean villages.
- Lunch on the trail. Optional visit to thermal baths near the campsite.
- Dinner and overnight at Upis camp.
Day 2: Upis – Arapa Pass – Ausangate Cocha
- Early start and ascent to Arapa Pass (4,850 m).
- Descend to Pucacocha Lagoon and enjoy lunch with mountain views.
- Continue hiking to Ausangate Cocha (4,650 m). Camp near the lake with views of Ausangate Glacier.
Day 3: Ausangate Cocha – Palomani Pass – Pampacancha
- Breakfast and hike up to Palomani Pass (5,200 m), the highest point of the trek.
- Incredible views of snow-capped peaks and valleys below.
- Descend to Pampacancha (4,050 m) for lunch, dinner, and overnight camp.
Day 4: Pampacancha – Rainbow Mountain Camp
- Walk through rural trails with alpaca herds and colorful hills.
- Lunch and camp near the base of Rainbow Mountain.
- Rest early to prepare for sunrise hike next day.
Day 5: Rainbow Mountain – Chillca – Cusco
- 5:00 AM: Early breakfast and hike to Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain – 5,100 m).
- Enjoy sunrise views before the crowds arrive.
- Descend to Chillca where private transport will take you back to Cusco.
- Arrival: Estimated around 5:00 PM.
