This incredible 9-day trek combines two of the most sacred Inca sites: Choquequirao and Machu Picchu. Often referred to as the “sister city” of Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is a spectacular and remote archaeological complex only accessible by foot. On this trek, you’ll cross valleys, high passes, and lush cloud forests, ending with a visit to Machu Picchu. A challenging, life-changing journey for true adventurers and lovers of ancient history.
Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Cachora – Capuliyoc – Chiquisca
- Pick-up from hotel and transfer to Cachora.
- Trek begins from Capuliyoc with panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon.
- Descend to Chiquisca for first campsite (approx. 1,900 m).
Day 2: Chiquisca – Marampata – Choquequirao
- Early climb to Marampata with stunning views of Choquequirao.
- Afternoon guided tour of the Choquequirao complex.
- Camp near the ruins at approx. 3,100 m.
Day 3: Choquequirao – Pinchaunuyoc
- Morning visit to terraces and temples.
- Continue the hike through remote trails to Pinchaunuyoc (2,400 m).
- Camp surrounded by lush jungle and mountain views.
Day 4: Pinchaunuyoc – Maizal
- Descend to the Rio Blanco, then a steep climb to Maizal.
- Camp at 3,000 m with views of surrounding glaciers.
Day 5: Maizal – Yanama
- Pass through Minas Victoria (old silver mine).
- Cross San Juan Pass (4,200 m) and descend to Yanama (3,800 m).
- Camp in a remote Andean village.
Day 6: Yanama – Totora – Lucmabamba
- Transport to Totora and then to Lucmabamba in the cloud forest.
- Optional visit to local coffee plantations.
- Camp or homestay in Lucmabamba.
Day 7: Lucmabamba – Llactapata – Aguas Calientes
- Hike part of the original Inca Trail to Llactapata for a view of Machu Picchu.
- Descend to Hidroeléctrica and take the train to Aguas Calientes.
- Overnight in a hotel.
Day 8: Machu Picchu – Cusco
- Early bus to Machu Picchu and guided tour of the citadel.
- Optional climb to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (advance booking required).
- Train and transfer back to Cusco.
Day 9: Rest Day or Optional Cusco City Tour
- Enjoy a free morning in Cusco or explore nearby ruins (optional).
- End of tour services.
