The Short Inca Trail is perfect for travelers who want to experience part of this legendary trek without camping or long hikes. In just two days, you’ll walk through lush cloud forests, explore Inca archaeological sites like Wiñay Wayna, and enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) — just like the Incas did.
Ideal for families, seniors, and travelers with limited time, this route includes hotel accommodation in Aguas Calientes and a guided visit to Machu Picchu on Day 2.
Itinerary
This shorter version of the Inca Trail includes a full day of hiking on Day 1 and a complete guided tour of Machu Picchu on Day 2. Accommodation in Aguas Calientes is included for a comfortable overnight stay before visiting the citadel.
Day 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Sun Gate – Aguas Calientes
- 4:00 AM: Pick-up from your hotel and transfer to Ollantaytambo train station.
- 6:10 AM: Train to Km 104 (starting point of the hike).
- 8:00 AM: Begin the trek with your guide. Visit the Inca site of Chachabamba and hike uphill to Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m).
- Lunch box provided en route.
- Continue along the original Inca Trail to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where you’ll see Machu Picchu from above.
- Descend to Aguas Calientes by bus and check in to your hotel.
- 7:00 PM: Dinner and briefing for next day’s visit.
Day 2: Machu Picchu – Return to Cusco
- 5:30 AM: Early breakfast and bus up to Machu Picchu.
- 6:30 AM – 9:00 AM: Guided tour of the citadel: temples, plazas, terraces, observatories, and more.
- Free time to explore on your own or hike to the Sun Gate again (optional).
- Return to Aguas Calientes. Optional lunch.
- 2:55 PM: Train to Ollantaytambo, then private transfer to Cusco.
- 8:00 PM: Arrival at your hotel.
